What is llms.txt and how to create it for your website
What the llms.txt file is, what it is not, what it should contain and an example for an industrial company, with the steps to publish it.
If you have heard of llms.txt, you were probably told it is “the robots.txt of AI”. It is a good image but an incomplete one. It is a text file, at the root of your website, that presents your site to language models with a summary and a list of important pages. This guide explains what it is, what it does not promise, and how to create it in an hour.
What it is
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a Markdown file, available at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, with:
- The site's name and a short description (what it is and for whom).
- A few notes on what is worth knowing when reading it.
- Sections with links to your key pages and one sentence per link.
Optionally, a second file (llms-full.txt) with the text of the important pages together, so a model can read it in one go.
What it is not
- It is not an official standard nor something all search engines and assistants use. It is a proposal that some sites adopt.
- It does not guarantee you will appear in an answer nor improve rankings by itself.
- It does not replace robots.txt, the sitemap or good content.
It is a cheap way to make clear what you are and where the important things are. If a system reads it, it makes its job easier; if not, you lose nothing.
How to create it, step by step
- Define your description in one or two sentences. Who you are, what you do, for whom and where.
- Add useful notes: languages, how to contact you, things you do not do, whether the figures on the site are examples.
- Group your pages into sections: services or products, sectors, about us, articles, legal information.
- Write one sentence per link with what the reader will find there (do not repeat the title).
- Upload the file to the root of your site and check it displays in the browser.
- Keep it up to date: if you publish an important new page, add it.

How to check it works
Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt and check that the file loads as text, the links respond and the content matches your site. Then ask several assistants the same questions again (see the guide to showing up in ChatGPT) and note whether anything changes.
